to have a better idea of how it works, it is better you show the surfaces (exactly like you are doing) but also the wireframe. The wireframe doesn't have to be anything fancy, so simply intersect surface, pipe the curves, switch off the surface, render the wireframe (and post them with your surfaces). You will start understand and see more hierarchy between those lines first (less and more intricate maybe as bigger/smaller form, maybe as more or less curved...) Then when that step is done, you can look at those "structural lines" with the surfaces and see relationship of surfaces/intersection circle, structure/cladding, intricate space/simple space...
