Post-tutorial notes
[Tuesday 18 November]
Brief notes from yesterday's tutorial with Monia (hope to have you back soon, Natasha).
- Overall, the taxonomy is working. The methodology is yielding some promising results. No need to completely panic then. (Nice.)
- The tables are rather dry, but some of the sketches, especially the 'vertical displacement' ones on the 'Other' page are beginning to take me to exciting places. From those places and onwards!
- Look at scalar differences. Seek contrapuntal relationships. Contrasts. Juxtapositions. Differences (in perception rather than function):
interior/exterior
simple/complex
two edges/five edges
high/low
- How can corners at diametrically opposite ends share an edge?
- Think about the characteristics of point to edge, etc. What do the corners actually do?
- How do we judge whether these corners are successful or not?
demarcation
boundary
enclosure
[I like the word 'enclose' - it seems more active, somehow, than for instance 'envelop'; the space is enclosing itself in the corner...]
- The manifesto is good, but it now needs to be developed formally rather in the way that Le Corbusier worked with his Five Points. That is, pick a few moments, a few corners, a few effects that you wish to achieve, and build them into a model. Write a paragraph to go with these new corners.
- Think space. Define the space from the corner. It's not about creating nice corners, it's about creating specific spaces and spatial effects. The corners are a means to this end.
- Colour the edges? [Idea: work with gradients toward the corners? Maybe, if there's time, check Grasshopper's gradient function.]
- Connections and their spatial implications. What happens if you connect this corner with that? What happens if you connect them and then move the points of the corners? Etc, etc.
- For Friday: model, additional manifesto paragraph, TS idea, [portfolio sketch, email UCL, email Schott].

magnus.....you are crazy!!!how shall we read all this on your blog...?? but what I've seen while flipping through is WOW and inspiring- so I should take the time ... thanx for comment on my manifesto I did'nt know that chess set before..xx ina
