THE SPACE OF THE LIBRARY AS A SEQUENCE IN TIME

One can distinguish three basic functions of storing the written word that we can refer to as "repository", "archive" and "representation".

1. The function of a "repository" is to supply the knowledge required to perform certain activities.
"Stores" are primarily established with an eye to the future.

2. The function of an archive is to stock all sorts of things for possible re-use which one assumes might be importance one day
Archives relate to the past.

3. The function of representation involves the compilation of written works as treasures of learning with the aim of preserving and presenting a particular cultural identity
Representation relates to the present, to the now.

In a chronological sequence, the five plates will seek to translate this time and space relationship, based on Boullée's representation of the Library.PANORMA copy.jpg

Hi Kitty, you will need to resize your image so it is 500pixels wide as the website will not extend beyond this. On average images don't want to be more than 50k or so to keep image load speeds reasonable. If you have troubles resizing, ask someone in the unit for help...
