AXO Set Up

| | Comments (0)

This is a rough set up of the Axo...explaining the relationship whole to part - part to whole of the envelope. I'm planing to further show single frames like the one here on the top and how they are inhabited and change. This is what the top part of the AXO should cover .... axo-set-up.jpg

update render

lightwave seems to be rather difficult to handle especially regarding the right light- atmosphere.... the images from the last entry were renered in rhino v - ray - I'm still trying to figure out what suits the proposal best - these are some versions... I'm back on working on the 3D model for now - to set up the other 3 elevation views/render properly... and especially focusing on the connections/ corners deck/wall ... will post some of that later... what you think about the water? and about the tiling of the ground? I thought the water gets interesting as it seperates inhabitable from non-inhabitable ground condition - and therefore also directs circulation ... and light and reflection... any ideas about the use of water in the barcelona pavilion?

I was setting up the column/flat north facade of the envelope to start with.... and also articulated the ground a bit ... were there is a descending staircase that gradually lead down towards the inside .... were I'm planing to test some water reflections tomorrow for the rendering... second image shows the articulation of the column and how the it touches the ground....WIP....

Why Barcelona? And which block?

The project is not interested in Barcelona in a classical urban, contextual analysis sense- the white building remains completely self-referential and therefore it doesnt matter in an urbanistic sense which Barcelona block it occupies.

Barcelona gets interesting as site because of 2 different reasons- first it offers a very rigid, repetitive, background setting / the white ground/ which is for me the grid and second as a reference to Mies, and the famous Barcelona pavilion- another white building on white ground- as it is reconstructed and mainly experienced through photographs and media presence.

The specific block I choose is determined by these 2 factors. It is positioned in a relative middle position along the mirror achsis that is determined by the grand via and two significant round abouts. Espanya and Placa de Tetuan.

My project proposal operates in a constant reference to Mies, and I want it to be read like this but it also claims to become its own design position through the introduction of the contemporary building type notion of the building envelope.

I am working on the drawing of the unfolded envelope now, showing the 4 different elevations and corner conditions and the changing density/ articulation in regard to the background of the surrounding block facades.
