FINAL SET OF PLATES_DRAWINGS

My project explores the possibility to create a city as an object.

Nowadays architecture and urbanism work within cities in a separated manner, this segregation has promoted the fragmentation of the cities, were in architecture promotes the development of individual interests and urbanism its collective form.

As I response I will transform what is traditionally understood as a project of urban planning into an architectural one.

PLATE_01._ OLYMPIC NEIGHBORHOODS I understand each venue of an Olympic city as a community. I were by treating each venue as a dinstinct urban environment, it allows the possibility to overlap the various islands of the city.

IN SITE:

Contained within the object, the suburban, the urban , the tension by juxtaposition, and the open space, that wrap around the core.

Which the object sits in tension with a suburban context, within an urban context, in tension again in relation to another city, or in isolation.

So we see four dinstinct conditions of the contained context.

park strip +overlap of strips

|
I'm starting to work on the pre pre concluding drawing the juxtaposition of vertical and horizontal.

THIS is WIP, and still lots to do on it. But this drawing could be really helpful because visually is clear to show the overlap and the moments of "encounter" between communities or spaces, on this drawing I would really like to focus on those intersections, and explain how I understand those spaces of the city as the place in were the construction of the city is visible = the absolute overlap.

I hope I can really work on this to add as well some diagonal connectios such as the city stair or plaza....I'll work on pres tomo morning so I might finish it over the night.. (hopefully)...

Screen-shot-2011-05-30-at-6.42.14-AM.jpg

I fixed the park strip...It migh not be that visible, but it did change....

Screen-shot-2011-05-30-at-6.44.55-AM.jpg

DURING AND POST OLYMPIC

|
to explain the condensation vs expansion, in were in the during Olympics is a platform empty for the spectators, and afterwards, the space densifies on the main core (which can be as well expanded) but the exterior of the core expands. so In this case the "park community" expands as well....so after the Olympics the vertical cores can expand.

Screen-shot-2011-05-30-at-9.33.27-AM.jpg

I already fixed the lines of these two images, just need to add the color again to be done...(will upload later)

Hopefully I'll finish all the drawings today.

still need to do the last book, the view of the horizontal plus vertical strip, fix some things on the park strip, and if I have time on the public core as well....print some books....and finish these drawings....but bng possitive that will be done today to focus on pres tomorrow and tuesday...

fixed:
(the horizontal connections between the athletes/suburban village, to pool, to green river, to landscape)
Screen-shot-2011-05-29-at-8.38.46-PM.jpg

The white space on the community at the right is absolutelly intentional, the texture is given by the paper. to make clar the 4th contained environments. and through the transparency kind of reveal one of the interiors....this drawing can be improved, but will leave it this way for now...I think the idea is clear...

condensation vs expansion

|
Working on the drawing to explain the expansion of the city after the Olympics, these are still wips.

I am still trying to decide, which I'll use. the one at the top is how I understand the idea of the expansion, as densifying the public core, and expanding the vertical communities.

The second drawing from the top to the bottom is the same idea but how the public core can be reconfigured and expand.

And the third is a more clear transformation of the public core. I think I'll choose one between the first and second...the third is getting confusing so the first two migh be clearer.

I'll blog the final version as soon as is done.

Finishing city plan...
This work in contrast with the suburbs one, Im trying to keep it as simple as the one of the suburbs, so the change of scales can be understood clearly. the "field" comunity (of individuals) vs the city "the communities within communities" and to reinforce as well the idea of the individual and the collective...

Screen-shot-2011-05-26-at-4.33.13-AM.jpg

Screen-shot-2011-05-26-at-4.32.10-AM.jpg

I'm trying to finish fixing today all the drawings I need to fix, so tomorrow I can dedicate the whole day to presentation rehersal + if there is something to be fixed from the drawings have them on friday in case something need to be improved...

THE SECOND EUREKA, but not too sure:

The below is a WIP of half during Olympics and half post.... condensed (crowd)- expansion (the "luxury" condition ).... but by expansion I want to make super clear in the drawing that is not "filling", but rather compressing again, as I started with the whole proposal but this time, within the communities?....so the surrounding becomes a open green space, and in this case (the drawing below), the stadium densifies....but space expands...¿? which now that I am thinking......this could be kind of what compressing again makes to the context  I created or the Olympic tower, which I say it might be what my thing is doing to "a place", if I compress as I did the space at the outside "expands" ?...

mmmmm not too sure....

I mean the drawing is not good to show that.....I'm still trying to imagine it, and this is how I have solved it so far.....

Screen-shot-2011-05-26-at-6.38.58-AM.jpg

A kind of Eureka!?....

|
Now that I was thinking on the presentation, I thought maybe that if I do a drawing of one of the vertical communities but with the "top" community/suburbs, plus the "ground" community-city, I can explain the tension generated by the juxtaposition of this two spaces and the link -the vertical strip, is what generates all the in between communities, what connect them?....

And maybe If I "title" or caption the axo of the suburs as "architectural detail", I can explain the architectural detail not just as a "technical" solution but rather as an occasion to articulate an intersection "of an intensive design energy that proceeds outwards to condition the form of the whole"....?....field vs object, or field as an object...or...

Architecture, Technique + Representation. Stan Allen

mmmm...... I don't know I think something is there that can help me conclude...

PUBLIC CORE

|
I fixed the vertical strip of the public core, so we can see as well the transition of scale.

The vertical strips or vertical cores are the overlap of contents, the result of the internal relationships of city parts that determine the structure and direction of the field.

At the moment I'm working on the practicing my pres with my stuff....

Vertical communities/WIP WIP

|
Ok, I've been working on the drawings for vertical communities, I think still at the moment look super flat, the park one specially. I will add more detail. (I think if I do the model will help a lot to see the vertical comunities together -park and sports core-plus the horizontal ones) .

Screen-shot-2011-05-19-at-2.40.15-PM.jpg

The one below is a cut through the events, the public core. the good thing about this one is that shows really clear the scale of the event, but is difficult to read the detail of the drawing when is printed. So I thought I might do a version in were we can just see the event (a zoom in through all the sports) of the sport, because if I include the stadium it won't be visible.....

(still IP)...

Screen-shot-2011-05-20-at-3.01.04-AM.jpg

THIS IS A ZOOM IN OF THE DRAWING ABOVE:
Screen-shot-2011-05-19-at-2.42.18-PM.jpg

and the one of the stair is the one that I might not use....is hyper simple, but not in a useful way. I thought for this drawing might be better to build the vertical strip through the series of moments of how we se the stair inside the space, but I might do that after the jury.

A zoom in inside the "working/office" community/space/island. I'll add more detail in this view, seeing in the interior of the buildings to give a sense of scale, in relation with the stadium behind, and to give the "environment" of life in a "vertical" city, within the tower.

Wip views

Screen-shot-2011-05-16-at-1.34.13-AM.jpg
And these are the sketches of the views I still need to draw, but as I already know how they are going to show, is going to be pretty straight forward..

This views are going to be interesting, because each one shows the different islands within the tower, and as well, how in each of them the relation of the monumental space of the stadiums in each floor allows, a highly articulated or composed context.

For the vertical conections that are going to be drawn afterwards, I am going to use the same spaces I used for each of the sections, but how they start to connect the different islands, that will be as monumental (or even more) as the stadiums in relation with the overall.

wips of views

|
I am working on the views, but I am having a bit of hard time to get inside the building.

I am trying to have sketches for toworow to have feedback on that this are some sketches of views, but I am also working on the perspective inside the suburbs and the view of the park.

The view of the park is the most important because is the one that helps me better to my argument, but I am a bit confused on what is the right "technique" I should use...

I am not convinced of the views yet. I would like to make them more simple, I think I am complicating them a bit....but working on that

I'm finishing one more plan. This is the school. (primary school, university, nursery, kindergarden...)
Screen-shot-2011-05-09-at-10.06.21-PM.jpg

This is the further I got on the 3d model. I'll stop it for now with this to finish:

plans (overall plan/suburbs plan/school plan) ...I want to do two more (cultural community/theatre and park) but those will be done in the "in-between" moments....

storyborad

3d model view of the suburbs.

There are some things that I am not happy with the overall 3dmodel... I think will need to be drawn super graphic, because I don't want the tower to look "real" at any point (I mean, I know it will never do but...), so as well I think I will need to use "unrealistic" colors maybe?. I think I might use this model just for the 3d site plans (THE VIEW FROM PREVIOUS THING I BLOGGED) and to pick the views.

Screen-shot-2011-05-09-at-10.11.11-PM.jpg

mmm....I think I would  prefer more like rhino color style, than 2d line view....

3d mountain/tower IP...

|
And thinking how would be the "site" views, I did a sketch, with the bits I've model of the tower. they would work exactlly the same as the site plans, four different plates, that merged are one...but here is a sketch of the four together...

I just need to be faster with the 3d model and finish the tower....

Screen-shot-2011-05-08-at-4.25.05-PM.jpg

I've kept drawing it, and now the the cyicling tracks are there =the mountains. but I am not sure if they are too big?.....well I still need to add many many things, and still missing 6 floors.

The mountains make the tower look more absurd than without them so I think in terms of my argument is better.

My only concern is that I wouldn't like this 3d model  end up looking like my section, I think I'll need to remove the inbetween floors maybe?, eventhough things might look a bit more "floating".....

any suggestions?
Screen-shot-2011-05-08-at-4.14.56-PM.jpg
I think....the next floor will really need to be much more simply model....as the cubes shown in the drawing below.

I think I can also record, the stages, of each floor to see all the communities...but at the moment I will just stick on having the super basic 3d....

I'll change afterwards the "military" trees, so they look more alive...
Screen-shot-2011-05-08-at-3.50.24-AM.jpg
I started 3d modeling, but just two "venues" model, and my computer is already crashing...
So I'll model them separate and put them together in parts...

At the moment I am modelling it really "flat"-floor per floor, but I would like the drawing to show clear a general trajectory ( and fast trajectories-"vertical communities") , maybe not by paths but by the movement of the buildings within the spiral...

But this is how is starting to grow...

wip park/suburb communities plans

|
I'm drawing the park and suburs...I am having a bit more difficulty with the park one.....it is at the level of the mountain so, I am looking the best way to draw it in a way that I can show the mountains vertically but still not convinced,I think this plan must look as the "lung" of the city, but don't know yet how to give it that quality...

plan.

|
I will leave this plan for now. I realized a way in where can work better but I would need to start it from 0, but maybe I can leave that for a spare time.

The problem is that I think the overall pattern/structure is still not clear, and is a bit difficult to read. but on the other hand it serves to show, the content of the tower, which is the most important of this drawing. The communities will be shown in the cuts through the tower.

So maybe this plan is rather called the "content plan", and the other one will be the "structure plan", that will be drawn much more simple.

now I'm working  on the other plans to afterwards sketch the views.

Screen-shot-2011-05-05-at-8.21.15-PM.jpg

Still on the top view plan but is almost finished. I just need to define better the north/west side.  And chose carefuly the colors so, the communities will be understood easier that on the other plans.

And work on the "suburb/mall/park" plans but those will be fast.

wips

|
I am trying to find a way, to explain the "separate" communities but how the link to the over all scheme... my only problem for this is that as each of them are in different levels, and the different public spaces are supposed to cross and link, has been difficult for me even to understand or draw what I imagine, or how this is.

I want to show how the "suburbs" link to "the city"....but I don't know how to connect them...what circulation, or how.  And as well I've been trying to fix a bit the plan, but I am confused in how to show the different communities in the top plan, if everything is layered.
so the drawing below is my firts trial.
Screen-shot-2011-05-02-at-3.13.26-PM.jpg
This is the zoom in of that "city part/community" the houses standing in a free open green valley.
Is not the whole community, this "way of living/lifestyle/type" I want to make it different at the differen stages of the "mowntain/tower".....this level is when the "suburbs" start...but as it goes up I want them to transform...as well, I think I should stop thinking of this as floors, and might be my mayn problem, because I don't break the square, so I have been fighting with this...as well...

Screen-shot-2011-05-02-at-3.15.07-PM.jpg

The drawing below for instance, I tried to think as well on the layers above (the zoom in is below this drawing), where I can show the different stages as you move. but as well I think is not clear, or at least it doesn't show what I want...

Screen-shot-2011-05-02-at-3.12.38-PM.jpg

The zoom in:

Screen-shot-2011-05-02-at-3.13.05-PM.jpg

An then well, I tried to model it in 3d to understand it better but I am not happy at all:
(NOTE: the colors is just to make clear the different activities, I'll change them later, because I don't like them either)
I tried to make a view in were you can understand better the mixed activities (don't know why I put a column in the roof of the houses but it is not supposed to be like that)

I wanted to show the transition from city, to "dorm city" or... yes... and the pool, and the cliff. and the layers of scales through the structure, but I think it didn't work.

Screen-shot-2011-05-02-at-3.16.13-PM.jpg

So then I did this 3d drawing to understand the overall community and the layer of scales but, well...

(the stick above the roof of the houses it's a column that suppose to continue, that will go away)

Screen-shot-2011-05-02-at-3.15.47-PM.jpg

So then I started modelling a fragment trying to understand the logic of the overlap of city parts, like "tesco", office building, mall, cars and plaza

JURY notes/wip community "suburbs"

|
From my notes of the jury there are some things I found interesting that I need to clarify:

Emphasis on the ingrow condition of my city: (by densification not expansion)

-manhattan vs green field: both sites are an impossible expansion, or if there is any expansion what would that be.

- How to stop the vertical condition of expansion: I am a bit confused in this point, how I can explain its imposibility to expand vertically, in a way, the piramidal condition can explain that, but I would rather find a solution that doesn't necessarily is due to its form but maybe with the "content"/program/comunity that sit on the top?

-at the bottom, the jury said how is the outer boundary?, how I stop the expansion on that boundary?. About this Might be a bit difficult If I want to keep the ground floor "floating"....but thats in a way the relationship of the city with the site, that I want to make it accesible. But How I can keep that condition and imply that it cannot expand?.

-TRAJECTORIES:

-the accumulation of larger trajectories, how can I explain, that the trajectories in a sense is the stages of walking through the different communities or "islands".

-the paths? What are the key movements....If in the other models of cities I've done, the trayectories where the empty space or the path generated by the "vertical"/"section" layers, in this vertical arrangement how to travel, commute around the city...

Two stages of the project:

The Olympic Games stage
The legacy project

And how the "structure" allow this two conditions to happen.

Thinking in the drawing I've been trying to draw the "suburbs" part of that island....is a wip.

argument...

|
I've been trying to explain the argument and things I am questioning in my project, but is such a large subject that I am still a bit confused on how to frame it.

So I am working on it in parts and fragments, including new ideas.

This is a bit of text, for a part of my argument, I think I need to find a way in were I can explain it more simply, but at the moment I am trying to extend the text rather that compacting my ideas as I usually do.

So here are some things I've been writting, with lots of mistakes on redactation,  but hopefully with a clearer idea:

Before, every urban plan was a direct projection of the objectives of the clergy, feudal lord or merchant guild. a series of rules that were synchronized within a context. A citizen in orther to inhabit a city or place integrates into a social structure at a specific moment in time. These organizational structures are given by different hierarchical order, by drawing a street pointing to a specific route or by dictating the position of an individual house in relation with that hierarchical order, an all-inclusive significance.

On the other hand for instance in the Baroque, the city was transformed into a spectacle, the hierarchy was given to "the satisfaction of the eye"  which change the perception of intimacy. Nonetheless, avenues were terminated; this means that by having an orther in relation with power they had an end. The urban system was fully accepted by both the inhabitant and the planner.

With the Industrial Revolution comes a radical transformation. The spontaneous and unprecedented urbanization, by the overflow of the limits of the former city limits. The urban order was changed from having a meaning to an organization derived from an economic cause of its high demographic concentration, the urban complex.  The previous understanding of the structure of an urban system by inhabitants and planners was changed to be something "alien".

The city changes it form from being a system under control, to become a phenomenon by the lack of control.

As cities through time have evolved into highly complex systems, in this part of the thesis I want to open up a series of question, not only due to the delimitation of a space or a limit as a container but also the way the city is organized as an interior, the site itself. How to include within one single space the complex urban scenario in were we now live. How to create continuity without understanding this as a problem of communication and how these spaces can be reconfigured into habitable places.

The relationship between centre and periphery has been a crucial factor in relation to the growth of the cities, and on the way the cities have been planned. Cities are composed by a large variety of places and are divided in a series of groups or communities. For this reason, I consider important to think about the city as an inclusive space, as a variety of different spaces, rather that a homogeneous structure.

For this reason I am using the Olympic program as a single object, to reconfigure its proposal into a purely architectural "subject", to use an existing program that operates at the scale of the city and at the scale of the building, and were its programmatic structure is composed in orther to include as much public space as possible due to the large amount of people that visit this places during the games.

In this point of the thesis I question the way in were all this different activities can be juxtaposed, how to create a rational an logical structure out of such  complex systems.
