Mahalle is the Turkish word that is used to define the intersection of
the family life and public sphere. In this project I question the
potential ways of creating the Mahalle condition in a tower.

Metabolist Movement and the Nakagin Tower

The
year started by re-briefing an iconic project. I chose the Nakagin
Tower by Kisho Kurokawa. The ideas behind the Nakagin Tower are borrowed
from the Metabolist Movement. Metebolist Movement was started by
Japanese architects and designers for the 1960 World Design Conference.

The
architects and designers were all traumatized by the destroyed cities
left behind after the WW2. Even though the idea was already part of the
Japanese culture, stronger than ever; they believed no material lasts
forever therefore our buildings our new cities should be designed in a
much more intelligent way.

They believed buildings and cities
should be respond to our needs just like the nature of trees in terms of
the change they go through during the year. While some parts remain the
others can wear out, get replaced just like the leaves do.

Metabolists
mainly proposed tower communities for the new cities. This way they
would also be able to get around the new limitations for the land
ownerships set after the war. They would have artificial lands in the
sky that are owned and shared by many. Once a tower is fully occupied,
another tower would be built and another community would start. These
towers, when they are too old, would be sunken into the sea and become
the living space for the fish.

They were questioning the lifespan
of the buildings and their inflexibility for change. I thought this is
worth to discover in a time like this when large companies dissolve and
people are constantly on the move.

The Cell

When we look at how they were
executing their ideas;

Kikutake, the genius architect of the
movement built his own home, Sky House following the metabolist
principles. In time, when his kids moved out, he detached their room and
also replaced the bathroom and kitchen several times. The Sky House had
a concrete frame these rooms attach to and this frame stays as the
permanent side of the building while units get attached and removed. But
I already started to feel suspicious of the fact that the units that
get replaced were bathroom and kitchen instead of the rooms.

In
the beginning of the year I was very interested in revisiting this kind
of mass produced, replaceable living units since it has been more than
40 years and the technology can give us much more sophisticated and
attractive results when we try to answer these questions of mass
produced buildings if the subject is investigated just like the design
of a car.

Just like the Nakagin Tower, I would have a mega frame
and units that can be moved around and replaced in time. This tower
would look different when the units shuffle and every month would have a
different look.

The Negative
Space

But looking into Nakagin Tower, I realize the
failure is not about the insufficient technological development and the
ugliness of the capsules. It is about the rebellion of people that does
not like the pre-defined built in personal spaces. Inhabitants like
personalizing their living space their own way and they're more than
fine with the generic empty room. Although there can be ways of getting
around and responding to this demand I found the bigger picture; the
typology of a residential tower much more interesting.

I decided
to leave the personal space as an empty box and think about the shared
spaces and any new ways of breaking a tower into pieces that can work
easier with the human scale. Focusing on what is left outside the
personal space in a tower became much more interesting for me. I decided
to introduce a new mid-scale space in the tower that will neither be a
personal nor public space, will become an event space shared by both
public and private.

I tested the accumulation of cells similar to
the Habitat project. But this time the negative space would be the
shared space.

By removing the side walls of the cells I was
getting even more interesting spaces that formed because of the
alignments. Here I experiment the potentials of changing sizes of these
and creating a sequence of spaces starting from the cell and reaching to
the city scale.

I decided I need to have a hierarchy of the
artificial islands in different scales that are grouped and linking to
each other starting from the ground level.

I also tried to make
the definition of the personal space clearer. As our personal spaces are
becoming smaller, we spend less time at home; living rooms have less of
a meaning than they used to have. Our laptops allow almost anywhere to
become a work, entertainment space. Coffee shops are becoming the living
rooms and more we spend time alone, more the shared spaces are
celebrated. Our buildings, cities should take this as an advantage.

Site

For the site
choice, I was looking for a dense urban site with a high demand of
living. Istanbul became the ideal choice for me because of the war of
the iconic residential towers. These projects became the only interest
of the public in terms of the development of the city in the last decade
with TV advertisements and shopping malls they offer. Every new mall
integrated with a residential tower on the Sisli strip is a world in
itself that is selling an image, a lifestyle. The spaces in these
towers, the facades of these buildings are constantly changing in order
to respond the trends. I found this demand as a challenge that is worth
to consider a callback for the metabolist ideas.

One same shop
can survive with 100m distance on this strip in two malls because the
planning of the city is no longer based on the pedestrian's experience.
Every island is connected by the subway to the old parts of the city and
has its own exit and the ones that don't use public transportation
prefer driving directly to these mall. Therefore the idea of creating a
tower community, a tower city, worked well with Istanbul.

Chain Space

One of the
experiments I did was to set up three slab buildings adjacent to each
other that all have in themselves their own kind of circulation and
privacy conditions, providing different scales of spaces. Later, to
minimize the walks and make it less like an endless chunk of a building I
looked for more compact ways of creating merged spaces.

This led
me to the idea of chain. The chain is the ideal form that does not
allow any kind of physical replacement. I was arguing since the
beginning of the project that we don't have to physically remove or add
anything to respond to the changing needs. All we need is a sequence of
spaces designed to allow different scales of activities happen in a
tower to make it a city in another city, a community in itself. And this
space should create an atmosphere, a context in itself just like the
ground level so it does not feel isolated, different from the ground
level.

Most of the designers who spend time thinking on the
constantly changing, "city like" towers either investigated this subject
as a massive chunk of a building with long walking paths as streets or
as very small and precisely designed personal spaces that repeat
hundreds of times on a mega structural and circulation providing frame.

It
was about the repetition of a cell in Metabolist Movement where the
floorplate does no longer exist as a level,

While in the western
world, a tower was about repetition of a floorplate,
What I am after
is a bundle, a compartment that is to repeat.

This kind of a
break would make towers feel less like an endless block, responding to
the human scale.

I picked three types of chains that I find
potentially interesting to be a guide for creating spatial sequence;

The
Box Chain, Panther Link Chain and Snake Chain
Snake Chain would be
interesting to form rooms that are merging into each other on a row,
Panther
Link chain would be interesting for the connections between the levels
and the box chain would be explaining the compartments / Mahalle's that
I'm aiming to create.

After I have experimented with literally
using this chain types to create a tower,

I found it more
interesting to use the chain as a guide for circulation, instead of a
formal imitation.

Therefore, the first type of chain would be
formed by a ring of walkway, the second will be by stairs and the third
would be the escalators. Fourth would be with lifts. Gradually a chain
of circulation systems would link to each other while the scale of these
spaces also change in parallel to the type of circulation systems.

Chain 1, the Ring (Apartment)

In
the Nakagin Tower, inhabitant would see his neighbor from his giant
round window but would never have chance to share any space at any
moment in the tower except the chances of accidentally seeing his
neighbor on the lift.

In this lonely cell one cannot even hear
any adjacent rooms at all. When 140 capsules were sold, 1/3 of the
capsules were bought by families that would like to use this space as an
extension to their house to receive guests, as a shared space.

Starting
from the personal space, I started to create a chain of spaces in a
row. Four personal spaces would be followed by one shared space and
another four would be attached to this and a void would be connecting
another set of eight apartments with same configuration. Then this chain
of spaces would create a loop and create a neighborhood among them.

Chain 2, the Compartment (Mahalle)

Even
though it was always read like a capsule movement, metabolism was not
only about replaceable units. Rather than seeing the subject of these
replaceable units as a matter of mass production, just like a car;
today's generic vertical building can be seen as a repeating system as
well. On every 3 meters, towers have the same structural principles,
same circulation systems, services and even same viewing angles for
looking out to the city. Even though they are not produced in the same
factory, there is an ideal structural grid, lift and core size, even a
standard floor plate size expected by the clients around the world.

I
wanted to challenge this repetition and look for other ways of defining
a tile like system to form a tower. By doing this, the endless lifts,
cores and walkways would not exist anymore. These endless walkways and
lost feeling of the human scale makes towers the most boring and this
type of projects always result in failure. The tower becomes a place
independent from the ground, isolated from the city, an artificial
world.

Therefore being able to walk in and out, being aware of
the ground and the rest of the city, being able to see the sky at the
same time just like our experiences in the city is very important.

The
row of this neighborhood I formed in Chain 1 would need to have a
better relationship with each other instead of being just stuck on above
each other.

After doing several trials, I became aware that even
though I don't want to rely on the lifts for the circulation in the
tower, I have to have a lift through all of the floors and this would
also be a necessity for the structural stability of the building.

I
decided a shift of 4.5m on each level towards one direction will create
a very interesting condition where you can look up and down at the same
time and be able to have gardens as shared spaces not only in the
building but also outside. As every level shift 4.5m towards one
direction, they would rotate one unit on their own perimeter. This
rotation will give two types of shared spaces; one as a 9x9x3m space,
the other as a 9x9x12m space that can be used for different purposes.

Chain 3, the InterFloors (Street)

As
in every compartment 182 people live, inter-compartments become the
shared space for the 364 people.
Inter-compartments are the spaces
where public is able to walk through.

Chain 4, the SuperFloors (Highstreet)

SuperFloor
is four times the size of a Interfloor and it is the space for the
interaction of 632 people and public.
